Problems with the Term "Postcolonial"

1. Negative Connotation: The term "postcolonial" can be considered a second-class label. Salman Rushdie and Arundhati Roy are best-selling authors, but there seems to be a great deal of uncertainty as to what the term denotes.

2. Misleading Definition: "Postcolonial Studies" (PCS) would seem to label literature written by people living in countries formerly colonized by other nations, but there are many problems with this definition.

3. Misrepresentation: It's a sarcastic label for subjugated countries, ruled more by the influence of the United States than by their own indigenous governments.

4. Colonialism is Ongoing: The term "postcolonial" misleads by suggesting colonialism is over when most of the nations... Continue reading "Postcolonial Literature: Themes, Authors, and Challenges" »

Bram Stoker's Portrayal of Dracula

In this essay, I will analyze how Bram Stoker presents the character of Dracula in an excerpt from the novel. From the outset, it is evident that the author uses dramatic irony to inform the reader of the Count's malevolent nature beforehand.

Dracula's Imposing Presence

In the extract, the writer uses repetition and commas to portray Dracula as an evil character. This is evident in the line, "his face was strong, a very strong." This emphasizes that physical strength would appear threatening, especially during this era, as people believed that a person's behavior mirrored their appearance. The repetition of the phrase "very strong" exaggerates Harker's feeling of imposition in Dracula's presence. The use of commas... Continue reading "Bram Stoker's Dracula: Character Analysis" »

Proposal Example

Introduction

This proposal suggests ways teachers can use technology to get children reading. The aim of this proposal is to suggest a new way for teachers to integrate technology into their classrooms to foster a love of reading.

Current Situation

It is a fact that children are now spending more time on digital devices, browsing the internet, messaging friends, etc. It is also a fact that they are reading fewer books. This matters because reading books is known to improve:

  • Analytical thinking

So how can we use students' enthusiasm for digital devices to encourage them to read more?

Possible Solutions

First of all, we suggest that teachers actively encourage students to use the internet... Continue reading "Using Technology to Enhance Reading and Learning in Education" »
