Bismarck's Alliance System

After the Franco-Prussian War, Bismarck's goal was to isolate France to prevent them from recapturing Alsace and Lorraine. To achieve this, he created an intricate alliance system:

  • League of the Three Emperors between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia (1873 and 1881). Russia would not help France, and Austria-Hungary would not support England.
  • Triple Alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy (1882). It was renewed until 1914. The goal was to isolate France and ensure Italy's neutrality in case of war between Austria and Russia.

The 16th and 17th Centuries in Europe

The 16th and 17th centuries in Europe were a violent period. With the Protestant Reformation, societies were divided along religious lines. However, these conflicts were also about power, money, and land. Many Protestants (Calvinists) considered sacred images as idols and, therefore, sinful. This belief in iconoclasm caused the destruction of religious art across Europe.

The Italian Wars

The Italian Wars were a series of conflicts fought in Italy between France, Spain, and other European powers. They began when the French king Charles VIII invaded Naples in 1494 and ended when the Emperor Charles V sacked Rome in 1559.

Civil Strife in France

A Serene Winter Morning

It was a bleak winter’s day, and the snow had come early. The grass glistened like a carpet of crushed diamonds in the early morning sunshine. The air smelled pure and fresh. Everything seemed quieter, almost muffled. There was a sense of serenity in the atmosphere.

The Weary Soldier Fred

Feeling numb and wet, tired, and exhausted, he made his way along the path through the trench. His fingers ached in the winter wind as he clenched and unclenched them, trying to keep the feeling in their tips. He was a tall, slim man with a long face, a nose like a pin, and a thin, sandy moustache. He had a face like a lion’s and an eye like a hawk’s. His name was Fred.

The Overwhelming Stench of War

As Fred trudged through the icy... Continue reading "Life and Death in the Winter Trenches" »

Taylorism and Fordism in Industrial Production

The production system in factories was known as Taylorism (a work system developed by Taylor consisting of measuring the time used by workers in carrying out their work and eliminating unnecessary steps from the process, reducing them to the essential. In this way, it is possible to reduce the time used to produce and, therefore, a greater quantity is produced in less time, increasing the profit of the businessman).

Another major system was Fordism (a work system developed by Ford and implemented in factories consisting of reducing the industrial production process to very simple and distinct tasks, where each worker makes a part of the process).

Economic Systems and Global Models

Capitalism and the Mixed Economy

Capitalism is based on a free market economy, private ownership of the means of production, freedom to work and hire, and state intervention on a small scale. One variation of this is the mixed economy, which involves greater intervention from the state in terms of establishing laws, regulating certain prices, and providing for the social well-being of its citizens.

Communism and Centralized Planning

In Communism, the economy is planned and centralized by the state; the production process is controlled, and the state is the owner of the means of production. Private property and initiative do not exist, only state-owned properties. Its objective is to achieve collective benefit...
