English Grammar: Conditionals

First Conditional

The first conditional expresses a possible future condition, describing situations or connections between events that are likely to happen. It is used to refer to possible results and actions.

Structure: If + present simple + will + infinitive (without to) / imperative

Example: If he invites me, I will go to the party.

Second Conditional

The second conditional expresses an unreal present or future condition, describing situations that are unlikely to happen. The verb in the past tense does not refer to the past, but rather to a condition that does not exist in reality.

The Restoration of the Constitutional Monarchy

General Martínez Campos proclaimed Alfonso XII, son of Isabel II, as king in 1874, which began the Restoration. The regime of the new king, a supporter of constitutional monarchy, named Cánovas del Castillo as the President of the Government. Cánovas was the real architect behind the return of the Bourbons to the throne. He worked to organize and stabilize the political situation. On one hand, he ended the war in Cuba and the Carlist War; on the other, he created a new political system in which all parties had room to accept the monarchy within a constitutional framework. This political system was based essentially on two pillars: a new constitution and the alternation of parties in power.

Agrarian Society and the State

The agrarian economic system was based on an economy that produced what nature would not deliver on its own. They obtained all necessary resources through agriculture, leading to a significant social transformation: a sedentary lifestyle. Since they no longer had to travel for food, they settled in favorable locations to produce the first stable demographic nuclei.

These societies were egalitarian and self-sufficient, much like hunting societies, where all members contributed to the good of the group and its perpetuation. The individual maintained a connection to their group in terms of economics and thought, as there was no formal legal system.

Colloids and Solutions

Colloids resist filtering, although some particles are retained in the filter. These particles can be detected by the scattering of light when it passes through the mixture; this property is called the Tyndall effect. Common examples of colloids include milk and certain juices.

In contrast, actual solutions contain particles with sizes similar to atoms or molecules (less than 1 nm). These cannot be filtered or decanted and do not exhibit the Tyndall effect.

Bencomo: The Mencey of Taoro

Bencomo was the mencey (king) of Taoro, a Guanche menceyato on the island of Tenerife. He fought in the First Battle of Acentejo, a victory for the Guanches against the invading Castilians, after having refused the terms of Alonso Fernández de Lugo. He may have perished on the heights of San Roque during the Battle of Aguere, alongside his brother Tinguaro.
