Independent clauses: clause, doesn't form part of any larger clause structure. They can be coordinated and they can include embedded dependent clauses.  They’re all finite and are used to perform speech-act functions. Types of premodification. Four major structural types: Gral Adj: big house.ed- participial: painted house.ing-particpial modifier: boarding house.noun: coffee house. Premod use fewer words than postmodifiers to communicate more or less the same info.  Most adjectival and participial premodifiers can be re-phrased as longer, post modifying relative clause. Dangling (or unattached) participles. A participle should describe the grammatical subject of the main clause, e.g. when I was looking out the window the day seemed very cloudy / Looking out the window the day… (in the second sentence it seems that the day was the one looking out). In a dangling participle the speaker really intends to describe something other than the grammatical subject of the sentence. (an ing- or ed-clause with an understood subject that differs from the subject in the main clause). Nevertheless there are a few contexts in which these rule seems more relaxed: When the adverbial clause is a style adverbial and the implied subject is the speaker: honestly, it is an offence to publish the book. When the main clause has a non-referential it as subject: when cleaning with these products, it is safer to wear a mask. When the whole main clause is the implied subject of the adverbial clause, e.g. unheard by the public, the manager had to speak for him. When passive are used in scientific writing, e.g. vacuuming is a good solution to avoid allergies.

HISTORICAL reason why Rwanda is less developed: that it was a Belgium colony for over fifty years. This means that money was often sent back to Belgium instead of staying within Rwanda. ECONOMIC reason : that thousands of people are suffering from HIV/AIDS. This means that these people cannot work or pay taxes and their healthcare costs the government a lot of money. SOCIAL reason why UK is more developed: that people don't live in poor areas. This means that diseases cannot be spread fast.
