Book Three: The Return of Azarias

Paco and his family represent the victims of systemic injustice. His submission is absolute, and his harmony with nature is innate. A well-defined character, Master Ivan, walks with an air of arrogance and contempt, believing others are beneath him—a quintessential representation of the Señorito Franco era.

The central figure returns to be Azarias, who is evicted from his farm as "dirty and useless." He is integrated into the family of his sister, Régula, at the Cortijo El Pilon. The narrative describes his difficult adjustment to the house, his spring hallucinations, and his struggle to learn basic hygiene. The process is defined by daily routines:

  • The repetitive nature of farm life.
  • The arrival of Rogelio, who shows deep affection for his uncle.
  • The gift of a newly hatched grajeta (kite), which restores Azarias's sense of purpose.

Book Four: Hunting and Social Conflict

In this chapter, Paco, El Bajo, now serving as the game secretary, returns as the central character. This episode is divided into two distinct parts:

Part One: The Hunting Incident

This section focuses on the long-standing relationship between Master Ivan and Paco. During a hunting trip involving the Minister, the Deputy Secretary, and an Ambassador, a conflict arises. The Frenchman, René, highlights the cultural disparity between Spain and the rest of Europe. Offended, Ivan demands that Paco, Régula, and Ceferino sign the back of an invoice to validate his authority.

Part Two: The Marchioness and the Encounter

Regular visits to the Cortijo de la Marquesa disrupt the peaceful life of the servants. The Marchioness summons each servant to the Big House to inspect their work, offering a small tip while demanding their praise. However, chaos ensues when the Marchioness and her daughter, Miriam, encounter Azarias:

  • The Conflict: Seeing his shabby appearance, the Marchioness suggests transferring Azarias to a charity center.
  • The Defense: Miriam defends Régula, who remains shy and submissive.
  • The Revelation: Azarias takes Miriam’s hand and shows her the milana, exposing the extreme misery and neglect in which they survive, leaving the girl in a state of horror and amazement.
