Analysis of Los Pazos de Ulloa

Plot Summary Snippet

A brief argument suggesting that Julián could be a priest is presented before he is sent to reorganize the Pazos estate. Upon arriving and witnessing the scenario there, he is deeply impressed (or shocked). To escape the situation, he travels to the city with Don Pedro, the Marquis de los Pazos. There, Don Pedro chooses to marry Marcelina. After the wedding, Julián returns, pained by the affection he felt for Marcelina.

Narrative Structure

The structure of the novel can be divided into five parts:

  • Part 1: Chapters I to VII
  • Part 2: Chapters VIII to XIII
  • Part 3: Chapters XIV to XVIII
  • Part 4: Chapters XIX to XXVIII
  • Part 5: Chapters XXIX to XXX

In each part, the protagonist or central focus shifts to a different character.

Environment and Setting

Regarding the environment, we can differentiate two types of settings:

  • The town: Where one must adhere to social forms and where Don Pedro does not feel at ease.
  • The countryside (el campo): Where one can act freely without anyone judging. The countryside is depicted as brutalizing the characters.

Character Contrasts

Characters are often presented in opposition, contrasting in their nature, constitution, and other aspects.

Julián's Character

Julián is a weak man with a quiet character, often undecided. Fundamentally, he is somewhat naive, acting without malice. He develops a significant affection for Nucha.

Don Pedro's Character

In contrast, Don Pedro is the opposite. He is physically strong and corpulent, the prototype of rural men. He is dedicated to hunting and behaves like a feudal lord.

Nucha and Sabel Contrast

The same applies to Nucha and Sabel. Nucha has a romantic, introverted, and passive character, while Sabel is strong, sensual, and very assertive ('muy echada para adelante'). She lacks maternal instinct but is a very vital woman.

Primitivo's Greed

Primitivo is greedy; all he wants is money and is solely self-interested. He uses his daughter Sabel for his own purposes. He has no family instinct and is a conscienceless traitor.

Rita and Brutal Scenes

Rita is Nucha's sister and is contrary to her. Examples of the novel's brutal scenes include when Pedro beats Sabel for not having dinner ready, or when Don Pedro gets his son Perucho drunk.

Literary Style Analysis

Regarding the style, long sentences are often used to describe environments and characters in depth, frequently employing subordinate clauses. However, there are moments where the action is faster, and the phrases become shorter.
