Properties of Plastics
- Plasticity: The ability to deform under stress.
- Appearance: Often colored and smooth.
- Weight: Lightweight.
- Insulation: Excellent electrical and thermal insulating capacity.
- Mechanical Resistance: High resistance to mechanical stress.
Origin and Classification of Plastics
Plastics are derived primarily from oil, coal, and cellulose derivatives.
They are broadly divided into two main groups:
- Thermoset Plastics
- Thermoplastic Plastics
Thermoset Plastics
Thermoset plastics are molded by pressure and heat. Once cured, they retain their shape and cannot be re-melted or reshaped.
Common Thermoset Types:
- Phenoplasts (PF): These are hard and brittle plastics, such as Bakelite.
- Aminoplasts (MF): Known for being tough and light, an example is Melamine.
