Plastics: Composition, Types, and Manufacturing

Plastics can be defined as a set of synthetic organic materials that are easily moldable using heat and pressure. They are constituted by simple elements through a specific process: Monomers > Polymerization > Macromolecules.

Classification by Structural Composition

• Thermoplastics: These are plastics that can be remolded multiple times.
• Thermosets: These plastics cannot be returned to a moldable state once set.
• Elastomers: Artificial materials obtained by chemical synthesis, known for their elasticity.

Classification by Source

Plastics can be categorized based on their origin:

• Natural Origin: Materials such as wood and cotton.
• Artificial Plastics: Synthesized by chemical procedures and derived from

What Is an Electron?

An electron is a subatomic fermionic elementary particle.

Relationship With Electricity

Electrons carry a negative charge; their movement through a material conducts electricity.

What Is Electric Current?

Electric current is the flow of charge per unit of time (per second) traveling through a material.

Types of Current

• Direct Current: Electrons flow in the same direction.
• Alternating Current: Electrons change direction 50 times per second.

Ohm's Law

Ohm's Law defines the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance:

• R (Resistance): Measured in ohms (Ω). Formula: R = V / I
• I (Intensity/Current): Measured in amperes (A). Formula: I = V / R
• V (Voltage): Measured in volts (V). Formula: V = R × I

Volumetric Efficiency and Engine Performance

Modern engines are manufactured to meet specific standards: high specific power, sufficient elasticity, low fuel consumption, and reduced exhaust contaminants. Current systems used to improve cylinder charging in aspirated engines include multivalve distribution and variable intake.

Volumetric Efficiency

The efficiency of filling cylinders is calculated by comparing the mass of gas introduced into the cylinder against the maximum quantity that could enter. In atmospheric engines, the result is always below 1.

Multivalve Distribution

Multivalve distribution improves cylinder charging by increasing the gas passage section, thereby reducing resistance and head losses. Increasing the valve diameter would... Continue reading "Optimizing Volumetric Efficiency and Engine Performance" »

Introduction to Electronic Media Technology

Electronic media technology involves the use of microelectronics to create, retrieve, and report information.

Evolution of Computing

Early electronic components faced challenges: resistances impede the passage of current, while capacitors store electrical charge. Inductors are typically copper wires wound into a coil. Early vacuum tubes, metal cylinders covered by glass tubes, regulated the flow of electrons.

The evolution of computers can be summarized by generations:

• 1940s (1st Generation): Computers used vacuum tubes.
• 1950s (2nd Generation): Transistors and semiconductors appeared.
• Late 1950s - 1960s (3rd Generation): Integrated circuits were developed.
• 1969: ARPANET (connecting computers) was established.

Testing Properties of Materials

Conformation

Used to know the degree of suitability of materials to manufacture parts.

Features

Used to know the mechanical characteristics of metal.

Understanding the Mechanical Properties of Materials

Used to find out the mechanical properties of materials.

Defects

Used to verify that there are no defects in the parts.

Mechanical Properties

• Hardness
• Tensile strength
• Yield strength
• and so on

Types of Hardness Measurements

• Scratch
• Penetration
• Rebound

Penetration Methods

• Brinell: A steel ball is used as the indenter, and the measurement is the area that the steel ball leaves.
• Rockwell: A diamond-tipped conical tip is used for hard materials, and a spherical tip is used for soft materials. Hardness is found by measuring the depth

Thermal Fluids and Engine Mechanics

Thermal motors convert thermal energy into mechanical energy using a heat source (Q1), performing work (T), and releasing heat to a cold source (Q2).

The Four-Stroke Combustion Cycle

The operating process of a four-stroke internal combustion engine consists of the following stages:

• Admission: The piston moves from the Top Dead Center (TDC) to the Bottom Dead Center (BDC). The intake valve opens, allowing the fuel-air mixture to enter the cylinder as the crankshaft rotates 180 degrees. The intake valve then closes.
• Compression: The piston rises from BDC to TDC. Both valves remain closed, compressing the mixture. The crankshaft rotates another 180 degrees, reaching maximum compression.
• Expansion: Spark plugs ignite

Critical Path Method (CPM) and Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT)

Activity Duration and Delays

If an activity's slack (MTIJ) equals zero, any delay in this activity will delay subsequent activities. However, activities can not delay the project if MTIJ is greater than zero.

Critical Path

The critical path is the longest path, which represents the minimum time necessary to complete the project. Activities on the critical path are called critical activities.

Activities with Uncertain Duration

When the duration of activities is not known with certainty, three estimates are used: optimistic (a_ij), realistic (m_ij), and pessimistic (b_ij). It is assumed that the duration of activities follows a beta distribution. Assuming t_ij are independent... Wheel Offset and Pumping (ET)

Pumping: This refers to the distance from the plane bearing the face of the disc to the support of the pumping hub. There are three types of pumping:

• Positive: The central mooring area is located outside the central pumping line.
• Zero: The central mooring line coincides with the central line.
• Negative: The central mooring is located towards the interior of the central pumping line.

It is identified with the initials ET, and the number that accompanies it is measured in mm.

Main Portions of the Wheel

The wheel consists of the tab, the seat of the heel, the throat, the retention slot for the tire, and the valve hole.

Valve Components and Function

The valve is the element that is introduced for pneumatic air, allowing the... Continue reading "Wheel Offset and Tire Construction Fundamentals" »

Piston Verification: Ensuring Optimal Engine Performance

Checking Piston Sliding Zones

Inspect the sliding zones of the piston. There should be no signs of jamming or excessive friction.

Weight Difference Between Pistons

Use a balance to compare the weight of each piston. Differences up to 4 grams are allowed. Larger differences can cause crankshaft imbalance and vibrations.

Piston Diameter

Pistons are not perfectly cylindrical. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to measure the diameter at the specified zone, usually at a certain distance from the head, measured transversally at the same height as the bolt. The installation clearance between the piston and cylinder compensates for thermal expansion and is typically between 0.02 and 0.05 mm.
