Hormone Action and Effects

Hormone action: interaction between hormone and receptor. Effect: the hormonal response generated by the action of the hormone: what it produces (insulin → lower glucose).

Historical Milestones in Insulin

Banting and Best (1920): Insulin isolated. Nobel: MacLeod and Banting. 1945: Sanger purifies protein.

Pancreatic Cells and Insulin Biosynthesis

Cell delta: somatostatin; cell PP: pancreatic polypeptide. Preproinsulin: preproinsulin → proinsulin [1 chain] - (removal of C‑peptide) → insulin (2 chains).

Insulin Receptor and Signaling

Insulin binds receptor (alpha subunit) → tyrosine autophosphorylation on kinase (beta subunit).

Glucose Transporters and Utilization

GLUT1: blood–brain barrier. GLUT3: nerve cells. Arrival... Continue reading "Insulin Action, Metabolism, and Energy Pathways in Cells" »

Anatomy of the Middle Ear

Tympanic Cavity (Middle Ear)

The tympanic cavity is a space located in the petrous part of the temporal bone. Its walls are as follows:

  • External Wall: Formed by the tympanic membrane (eardrum). The space superior to the membrane is the epitympanic recess (attic).
  • Internal (Medial) Wall: This wall separates the middle ear from the inner ear. It features the promontory (a central bulge) and two openings: the oval window (fenestra vestibuli) and the round window (fenestra cochleae). These windows communicate with the inner ear cavities and are sealed by the stapes (oval window) and the secondary tympanic membrane (round window).
  • Anterior Wall: Contains the opening for the Eustachian tube (auditory tube), which connects to

Healthy Eating Habits: Balancing Fast Food and Nutrition

Understanding Fast Food Consumption

In my opinion, fast food is not as damaging as it seems, provided we know how to consume it responsibly. There are different types of fast food, ranging from high-fat options to slightly healthier alternatives. While occasional consumption is manageable, frequent intake can lead to rapid weight gain. To my mind, fast food should be limited to a few times a month.

Personally, I believe that if you do not consume too much fast food, it should not be banned, as moderation prevents it from being inherently unhealthy. To sum up, fast food is not necessarily "junk" if it is not consumed in large quantities.

Nowadays, cafeterias are present in almost every school. While they are convenient,... Continue reading "Healthy Eating Habits: Balancing Fast Food and Nutrition" »

Immediate Life-Saving Actions: Essential First Aid Protocols

Immediate First Aid Protocols

1. Managing an Asthma Attack

  • Help the person sit in a comfortable position.
  • Ensure they take their prescribed medication (e.g., inhaler).
  • Stay with them until they feel better.
  • If the attack becomes severe, **call 999** immediately or delegate someone else to make the emergency call.

2. Controlling Severe Bleeding

  • Apply direct pressure to the wound using whatever is available (e.g., a clean cloth) to stop or slow down the flow of blood.
  • **Call 999** as soon as possible, or delegate someone else to do it.
  • Maintain continuous pressure on the wound until emergency help arrives.

3. Supporting a Serious Injury

  • Support the injury using the person's hand, a cushion, or items of clothing to prevent unnecessary movement.
  • As soon as

Food Contamination Risks

A food item is potentially at risk of contamination from the time of harvest until it is consumed. The risks related to food safety can be classified into:

  • Microbiological contamination: Bacteria, fungi, viruses, or parasites. Often causes severe symptoms.
  • Chemical contaminants: Natural substances, residues of veterinary drugs, heavy metals, etc., unintentionally introduced into the food supply during cultivation, breeding, processing, transportation, or packaging.

Common Food Contaminants

  • Heavy metals
  • Shellfish toxins
  • Mycotoxins
  • Pesticide Residues
  • Environmental organic chemicals

Factors Influencing Contaminant Risk

The health risk posed by a contaminant depends on several factors:

  • Absorption and toxicity of the substance
  • Amount

Impulso Nervioso

  1. Cuando el impulso

Diagnostic Tests and Procedures

Scanning and Recording (Tests Diagnosed Tics)

Clinical History is the initial interview with the doctor, where a thorough and systematic interrogation is conducted about the patient's history, current state, and finally completed with a physical exam and follow-up on their evolution.

All information is documented to form the clinical history, including surgical operations and procedures performed.

The clinical history comprises the following parts:

  1. Interrogation or Amnesis
  2. Physical Examination
  3. Tracking the Evolution of the Patient

1. Interrogation (Amnesis)

Personal History (of the patient): Name, age, marital status, address, etc.

Family History (Clinical): Information about relatives, including their health status, diseases,... Continue reading "Diagnostic Tests and Procedures in Medical Examinations" »

The Professional Degree in Medical Technology plays an important role in society through comprehensive training that considers technological advances and serves as a pillar in the Task Force, with full concern for the patient.

Post-training and postgraduate development is dynamic, constantly adding to the technologist's task through training and specialization courses, attendance and presentations at conferences, and developing high-level research projects.

The Medical Technology specialist must always consider protection elements to ensure that the irradiation dose is the smallest possible for both the patient and for occupationally exposed personnel, as well as the public and population.
