Military Drill Commands and Marching Techniques

Regulated Step (Cadence March)

From the fundamental position, upon the preparatory command and executive command, the movement begins with a regulated, rhythmic gait. This is often initiated with a command such as "Forward, MARCH!"

Route Step (March Without Cadence)

This step differs from the regulated step by allowing a relaxed pace without a fixed cadence. It is used to return to a normal marching pace after a period of regulated marching.

Uses for Route Step:

  • For individual training when directed by the commander.
  • During marches over varying terrain.

At Ease March (Step at Will)

Similar to the Route Step, but with the added allowance for personnel to talk, laugh, sing, whistle, or smoke. Personnel must return to a normal marching order upon the command "Regulated Step, MARCH!" or "Forward, MARCH!".

Uses for At Ease March:

  • During cross-country movements.
  • On roads or paths of any kind.
  • When circumstances permit.

Step Back Command

From the fundamental position, the movement begins upon the command "Step Back, MARCH!".

Command Sequence for Step Back:

  • Preparatory Command: "Step Back" (often accompanied by a slight shift of weight to the right foot).
  • Executive Command: "MARCH!" (initiates the backward movement).

Halt Command

The command to stop movement for a soldier, squad, platoon, or company.

Command Sequence for Halt:

  • Preparatory Command: "Squad, HALT!" (or "Platoon, HALT!", etc.).
  • Executive Command: "HALT!" (given as the left foot strikes the ground).
  • Action: Two more steps are taken (right, then left), bringing the right foot alongside the left to recover the fundamental position.

Conversion Movement

When a unit is marching in column or line, the command "Right (or Left) Conversion, MARCH!" is given to change direction.

Side-Step Movement

The command "Right (or Left) Side-Step, [Number] Steps, MARCH!" initiates movement from the fundamental position to the corresponding side for the specified number of steps.

Mark Time Command

Mark Time from a Standstill:

From the fundamental position, upon the command "Mark Time, MARCH!", personnel begin moving their feet alternately, raising each foot approximately 30 cm without advancing.

Mark Time While on the March:

Upon the command "Mark Time, MARCH!", given as a foot strikes the ground, personnel take one more step forward and then begin marking time.

Halting from Mark Time:

Upon the command "Squad, HALT!", given as a foot strikes the ground, personnel take one more mark time step and then bring the other foot alongside to regain the fundamental position.

Resuming March from Mark Time:

Upon the command "Forward, MARCH!", given as a foot strikes the ground, personnel take one more mark time step and then step off with the other foot, resuming the forward march.
