Preanesthetic Medication

  • Decrease salivary and bronchial secretions
  • Prevent bronchospasm
  • Antagonize respiratory center depressants
  • Protect the heart from bradycardia induced by some general anesthetics
  • Prevent vomiting

Disadvantages:

  • Post-operative urine retention
  • Intestinal hypomotility (paralytic ileus)
