Reported Speech Structure

Formula: Subject + said that + subject + verb/modal + rest of the sentence.

Example: "I can't wait until the new bike lane is built." → He said that he couldn't wait until the new bike lane was built.

  • Modal Verbs: If the verb is a modal (can, may, will), the verb form often remains the same or shifts to its past form.
  • Non-Modal Verbs: If it is not a modal, apply the backshift rule. Example: "I am having my driving test today." → He told me that he was having his driving test that day.

Reported Questions

  • Yes/No Questions: Use asked if. Example: "Do you like chocolate?" → They asked the girl if she liked chocolate.
  • Wh- Questions: Keep the question word. Example: "What is your favorite flavor?" → Fran asked what my favorite flavor was.

Reported Commands

Change the imperative to the infinitive (to + verb). Use reporting verbs like tell, order, ask, beg, invite, or warn.

Example: "Stop staring at me," the mother told her son. → The mother ordered her son to stop staring at her.

Note: If the command is negative, place not before the to.

Suggestions

Use suggest or recommend in the past tense (-ed).

  1. Using 'That': "Take the shortcut," he recommended. → He recommended that we take the shortcut.
  2. Using Gerund (-ing): "Let's make chocolate biscuits," she suggested. → She suggested making chocolate biscuits.
