A fundamental premise when collecting a water sample is to ensure the specimen is representative of the source being analyzed.

Microbiological Analysis Protocols

When performing multiple types of analysis, microbiological evaluations must be conducted first to avoid contamination. Sterile containers must be opened immediately before collection. To maintain integrity:

  • Do not touch the inside of the plug or the mouth of the receptacle.
  • Do not pre-rinse the bottle.
  • Fill the bottle and ensure the plug is sealed tightly to prevent leaks.

Collecting Samples from a Tap

  1. Remove accessories such as filters or atomizers.
  2. Clean the tap with water or ethyl alcohol.
  3. Open the faucet and let the water run until the supply is renewed, then close the tap.
  4. Sterilize the tap mouth using a flame from an alcohol-saturated cotton swab held with forceps.
  5. Open the sterile bottle without touching the sterile areas.
  6. Hold the bottle base with one hand and the stopper with the other, ensuring the stopper faces downward.
  7. Fill the bottle, close it, and shut the tap aseptically.
