Understanding Refractive Errors

Refractive errors occur when the eye does not allow light beams to focus exactly on the retina. This includes conditions such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

Myopia and Hyperopia Explained

In a myopic eye, the eyeball length is typically between 27 and 36 mm, causing light to focus ahead of the retina. Conversely, a normal eye measures approximately 25 mm. Myopia often stabilizes when a person stops growing. Hyperopia, or physiologic farsightedness, occurs when the focus falls behind the retina.

Surgical and Corrective Treatments

  • Phacoemulsification: A 12-minute surgical procedure performed under anesthesia to treat cataracts, which are caused by the opacity of the crystalline lens.
  • Refractive Surgery: Techniques such as LASIK and the implantation of flexible epicapsular lenses behind the iris.
  • Lenses: Corrective options include concave lenses for myopia and convex lenses for hyperopia. Lenses can be made of glass, plastic, or polycarbonate and may feature anti-reflective or photochromic coatings.

Managing Eye Health

Patients with specific conditions, such as glaucoma, may require oral corticosteroids to manage inflammatory processes. It is essential to maintain hygiene, such as using individual towels, to prevent infections. If a patient cannot adapt to contact lenses due to issues like low tear production, fat excess, or light sensitivity, alternative corrective measures are necessary.

Orthopedics focuses on the rehabilitation of body parts, using forces and directions to treat joint injuries or deformities. External prostheses are utilized to compensate for deformities or to replace the absence of a body part. Diagnostic tools in this field include mirrors, tape measures, podometers, and pedigraphs.
