The Nature of Poetry

The poem is a text composed in verse with particular rhythmic traits. Defined as a work structured in verse, it stands in contrast to prose. Poetry is traditionally divided into two main categories:

• Epic: Narrates facts and events.
• Lyric: Expresses the poet's individual experiences and constitutes the genre of poetry itself.

Language and Musicality

Poetry utilizes connotation, which enriches the meanings of words and establishes relationships through metaphors, contrasts, and comparisons. The musicality and rhythm are produced by the repetition of sounds, the arrangement of words, the alternation of tonic and unstressed syllables, pauses, and rhyme. These formal elements create a pleasant and artistic language.

Verse Structure

A verse is a succession of syllables arranged to create a specific rhythm. Two basic elements define this pace:

• Meter: The number of syllables in a line.
• Rhyme: The matching of sounds between two or more verses starting from the last tonic syllable.

Measuring Verse

Techniques for measuring verse include:

• Elision: When a vowel is deleted in contact with another.
• Synalepha: When two adjacent vowels of different words form a diphthong.
• Hiatus: When vowels in contact are pronounced in different syllables.

Rhyme Schemes

• Chained Rhyme: When rhymes alternate (e.g., ABABA).
• Crusade Rhyme: When rhymes are organized as ABBA.

Strophic Compositions

Single Stanza Forms

• Corrandes: Popular songs, usually four heptasyllabic verses.
• Haiku and Tanka: Short poems of three and five verses, respectively.

Indefinite Number of Verses

• Romance: A succession of heptasyllabic lines; rhyme is assonant in even lines, while odd lines are white.

Multiple Stanza Forms

• Sonnet: Two quartets and two tercets, typically decasyllabic or Alexandrian.
• Sestina: Six stanzas of six decasyllabic verses each, closing with a three-verse stanza.

Stanza Types

Common stanza structures include the couplet, tercet, quartet, quintet, sextet, and octave.
