Energy Pathways in the Body
Body movements initiate with muscle contractions. Muscles transform food energy into mechanical energy and heat. All movements require energy. The primary source of energy is ATP. ATP is obtained in two main ways:
- Aerobic System: This system utilizes oxygen to produce ATP. It can sustain activity for longer periods (over 3 minutes) during prolonged or lower-intensity exercises.
- Anaerobic System: This system provides energy when oxygen supply is insufficient for the body's demands, typically during high-intensity activities lasting up to 3 minutes. Muscles utilize stored energy reserves.
Energy Supply Systems
There are two primary energy supply systems:
- Anaerobic Alactic System: This system uses stored muscle ATP and phosphocreatine to rapidly regenerate ATP. It provides energy for very short bursts of intense activity (approximately 6 seconds).
- Anaerobic Glycolysis: This system uses stored muscle glycogen. It begins a chemical process that provides energy for ATP synthesis without oxygen. This process leads to the production of lactic acid, which can cause muscle fatigue when it accumulates.
The anaerobic pathways are typically activated first, being the fastest. However, the aerobic system is also engaged, especially during sustained activity.
Warm-Up Procedures
A warm-up is a set of exercises and activities performed before training to enhance performance and prevent injuries.
- General Warm-up: Includes dynamic movements such as rotations, skipping, dancing, and progressive exercises. Static stretching (e.g., for hamstrings, abductors, quadriceps) can also be included.
- Specific Warm-up: Involves exercises directly related to the planned training or sport. For example, in football, this might include drills targeting abductors and quadriceps.
Training Systems
Different training systems are employed to achieve specific fitness goals:
- Continuous Training: Involves sustained, repeated actions over a period, such as running or swimming. It typically involves moderate intensity and high volume.
- Interval Training: Characterized by high-intensity bursts followed by recovery periods. The recovery can be active and incomplete.
- Repetition Training: Similar to interval training but with complete and passive recovery between repetitions.
- Competition Training: Mimics the intensity and structure of a competition (e.g., repeating a 100m race distance at competition pace).
- Fun Training: Incorporates games and enjoyable activities to increase engagement and make training more interesting.
Major Muscle Groups
- Legs: Gastrocnemius (calves), hamstrings (back of thigh), quadriceps (front of thigh), gluteus (buttocks).
- Trunk: Abdominals, pectorals (chest), erector spinae (lower back), latissimus dorsi (mid-back), trapezius (shoulders).
- Arms: Triceps, biceps, forearm flexors and extensors, deltoids (shoulder).
