What Is Energy?
Energy is a physical magnitude related to the ability to cause changes in a body. It is measured in Joules (J).

Energy Features
- Accumulation: Can be stored for later use (e.g., capacitors).
- Transportation: Can be moved (e.g., electricity through cables).
- Transformation: Can change forms.
- Transfer: Can be passed from one body to another (e.g., heating water).
- Conservation: Energy is preserved; it cannot be created or destroyed. This is one of the most important principles of physics.
- Degradation: Energy undergoes degradation.
Types of Energy
- Mechanical: The sum of two energies:
- Kinetic Energy (Ek): Energy of moving bodies.
- Potential Energy (Ep): Energy based on position.
- Electric: Energy from moving charged particles, known as electric current.
- Internal: Energy resulting from the movement of atoms or molecules within a body.
- Electromagnetic: Does not require a material medium, does not degrade during transport, and travels at 300,000 km/s.
- Chemical: Energy stored in chemical bonds, such as in organic compounds or organisms.
- Nuclear: Energy stored in the nucleus of atoms, released through nuclear reactions:
- Fission: An atom is divided into two parts, releasing a great amount of energy.
- Fusion: Light atomic nuclei combine to create a heavier nucleus.
- Thermal: The transfer of energy between bodies of different temperatures.

Sources of Energy
Non-Renewable Sources
- Coal: Used as fuel in homes and as a raw material.
- Oil: The most widely used energy source; a better fuel than coal. It is used to produce plastics, fertilizers, and paints.
- Natural Gas: A mixture of gases, primarily methane. It is clean-burning and easier to transport and store than oil.
- Uranium: An unstable element used in nuclear power stations. Fission heats water to create steam, which moves turbines. It produces nuclear waste.
Renewable Energy Sources
Hydroelectric Power
Generated in dams. When water is released from a reservoir, it moves a turbine to generate electricity.
- Advantages: Low maintenance, no waste generation, non-polluting, and helps control floods.
- Disadvantages: Expensive to transport generated energy, weather-dependent, requires large areas for reservoirs, and poses risks if dams break.
