Road Events
Marathon
Covering a distance of 42.195 km, the marathon is a staple athletic event in the Summer Olympic Games. It represents the ultimate challenge in endurance and strength, requiring athletes to pace themselves carefully to maintain oxygen levels.
Racewalking
A popular global event, racewalking is featured in major competitions like the Olympics. Athletes must cover a set distance as quickly as possible while adhering to strict rules: the toe of the back foot cannot leave the ground until the heel of the front foot makes contact.
Field Events
Jumping Events
These events consist of four phases: starting run, take-off, flight, and landing.
- High Jump: Athletes sprint down a runway toward a four-meter horizontal bar and jump vertically over it onto a cushioned mattress.
- Long Jump: Focuses on distance from a take-off line.
- Triple Jump: Known as the hop, step, and jump.
- Pole Vault: Athletes clear a horizontal bar with the assistance of a vertical pole planted in a box.
Throwing Events
- Hammer Throw: Involves an extremely heavy 7.2kg metal ball attached to a handle, requiring immense strength and technique.
- Discus: Utilizes a spinning technique to generate speed and power within a circle before release.
- Javelin: Athletes use speed and strength to throw a long, spiked pole as far as possible; it must land with the tip first.
- Shot Put: Requires significant strength. Athletes begin from a stationary position and must use only one hand; they cannot leave the circle until the shot has touched the ground.
Mixed Events
Heptathlon
Combines seven track and field events to test endurance, strength, and all-around ability: 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m run, long jump, javelin, and the 800m run.
Decathlon
Designed for male athletes, this event tests stamina and strength through ten disciplines: 100m run, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m run, 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and the 1500m run. Only three attempts are allowed in each field event.
