Detection of the Television Signal

The television signal detection process shares the same basic structure as a receiver and includes heterodyne stages. These stages consist of the tuner, the IF amplifier, and the video detector. Additionally, it contains an automatic gain control (AGC) system to ensure a constant signal level at the detector output.

The Tuner

The tuner is responsible for receiving the TV signal from the antenna and converting it into an intermediate frequency (IF) signal, which is then processed by the remaining stages. Its basic functions include:

  • Amplification: Regularly amplifies the signal received from the antenna.
  • Filtering: Selects the desired channel while rejecting others.
  • Frequency Conversion: Converts the antenna input signal to a fixed intermediate frequency of 38.9 MHz.
  • Impedance Adaptation: Matches the impedance of the antenna cable to the tuner.
  • Bandpass Filtering: A radio frequency filter that removes adjacent channels that are not of interest.
  • Mixing: Places the desired channel frequency range into a fixed band for demodulation.
  • IF Output Circuit: A bandpass filter that removes unwanted frequencies from the mixer output.
  • Local Oscillator: Generates the reference frequency used in the mixer to tune the desired channel.

RF Amplifiers

RF amplifiers are tuned circuits designed to amplify signals within a narrow frequency range. Their key characteristics include:

  • Low distortion
  • High gain
  • Elimination of adjacent channel interference and noise
  • Low noise factor

The RF Oscillator

RF oscillators are electronic devices that produce a sinusoidal signal of a specific frequency at their output. The basic structure is based on an LC circuit in resonance; however, external power is required to maintain oscillation indefinitely.

Common Oscillator Types

  • Colpitts Oscillator: Uses two capacitors and a coil to configure the feedback network.
  • Hartley Oscillator: Uses two coils and a capacitor to set the feedback network.
