Spanish Urban Cultural Heritage

The importance of the economic and cultural character of the Spanish city has been recognized by UNESCO. Many of the properties inscribed on the World Heritage list are cities such as Cuenca and Toledo.

Material and Intangible Heritage

Material heritage: The number of monuments, museums, archaeological sites, gardens, historical sites, traditional architecture, and industrial archaeology forms an overwhelming ensemble shaped by history, all of which are protected with special development plans.

Immaterial or intangible heritage: This is related to urban festivals, crafts, customs, popular knowledge, folklore, gastronomy, and everything that has to do with the symbols and ways of life of a city. Examples of intangible heritage in cities include:

  • Valencia: Las Fallas
  • Pamplona: San Fermín (Sanfermines)

High Culture and Alternative Urban Expressions

High urban culture is usually identified with:

  • Great expressions of music: Classical concert series, festivals, and opera.
  • Dance festivals.
  • Theater representations.
  • Film and audiovisual festivals.
  • Major exhibitions and art fairs.

However, the city is also the scene of alternative cultures. Many of these contribute to the so-called urban tribes. Some of their expressions include:

  • Graffiti
  • Alternative music

Each tribe has its own urban map with their respective venues and modes of sociability.

Major Challenges and Problems of Modern Cities

The first question is the actual supply of cities regarding all kinds of food products, energy, and water. Cities are large consumers of resources. To ensure that this basic supply runs smoothly every day, investments in infrastructure for such needs must be very high.

Environmental Impact and Infrastructure

Another serious problem is heavy traffic at peak times. To alleviate the problem of traffic, municipalities build public bypass roads. Local governments spend much of their budgets on transportation costs. High traffic volume is the main cause of air pollution in cities, which is one of the biggest problems of the urban environment.

Waste Management and Social Issues

Another serious issue is the treatment of urban waste. This process is very expensive, which explains the appearance of uncontrolled landfills on the outskirts of some cities. In recent times, the price of housing has grown dramatically. As a result, people with fewer economic resources are forced to live in neighborhoods that are far removed or degraded. Other major problems include the debt of municipalities, as well as crime and social exclusion.
