Bill Clinton(1992-2001).Defeated George H.W.Bush in 1992 election.Clinton won 43%of the vote against Bush’s 37,4% and populist billionaire Ross Perot’s 18,9%.Tried to implement a health care reform but failed.International agenda focused on peaceful resolution of conflicts.Thus,he favoured a multilateralist policy.Clinton Administration Domestic Incidents(I):The World Trade Center Bombing(Feb.1993).Terrorists trained at an Al-Qaeda training camp parked a van in one of the public parkings beneath the WTC on Feb.26,1993.-Terrorists intended to knock Tower One into Tower Two,bringing both towers down and cause thousands of civilian casualties.Six people were killed and over one thousand were injured.-The attack resembled 1983 Beirut Barracks Bombing modus operandi in the use of compressed gas cylinders.-Ramzi Yousef,leader of conspirators,was captured by Pakistani Intelligence of Feb.7,1995.The Waco Siege and Massacre(feb-april 1993).-Branch Davidian led by David Koresh was accused of abusing children,advocating polygamy and illegal arm possesssion.-They had established a community in Waco,Texas.They were a branch broken away from the Seventh Day Adventist Church.-Cult leader had convinced his followers of the Second Coming of Christ was about to happen.-The 51-day siege initiated by the FBI begun in Feb.28 and ended on Ap.19,1993.-75 members of the congregation and Koresh himself died on the final assault.The Oklahoma City Bombing(Ap.1995).-First domestic terrorist attack perpetrated by Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols,two right-wing militants.-On april 19,1995,they attempted to blow up a Federal Building.-The bomb attack was a response to Federal government handling of Waco siege two years earlier.-168 people were killed and over 800 injured.It was considered the deadliest terrorist attack on US Soil until Sept 11 attacks.The Middle East Conflict.-Sept.1993 Oslo Accords:Peace negotiations between Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat hosted by Clinton:Moderate Palestinian self-rule in Gaza and West Bank.-In Jul.1994,a compromise between Israel and Jordan coordinated by Clinton.Peace agreements did not end the conflict.Rabin was assassinated in 1995 by a right-wing radical who opposed Oslo Accords.-Benjamin Netanyahu became Israeli Prime Minister.-Oct.1998,Wye River peace talks:More territories in the West Bank to Palestinians in exchange of an attempt to curb terrorism.
