Green Manures

Green manures were introduced as traditional guano supplies dwindled. This method involves adding organic matter derived from annual herbaceous plants, grasses, and legumes.

Vegetable Fertilization

Because vegetables are short-lived crops, they require rapid decomposition and nutrient absorption. Bird guano is preferred. The most common type is "floor breeding" or "ground chicken," a mixture of industrial byproducts, rice flour, or oil combined with poultry litter.

Soil Tillage Tools and Methods

• Plow: Traditionally used to bury vegetation; now largely replaced by disk plows and disk harrows.
• Chisel: Aerates the soil without damaging roots or burying vegetation.
• Minimum Tillage: Minimizes soil disturbance, often utilizing herbicides for chemical weed control instead of mechanical methods.
• Zero Tillage: Planting directly into the soil without tilling after the previous harvest.

Limiting Factors in Agriculture

Erosion is the removal of topsoil by wind or water. Man-induced erosion occurs when soil is left bare and exposed. Conservation is the primary method of prevention, best achieved by maintaining ground cover through trees and grasses.
