Scientific Method Stages

The scientific method involves several key stages: observation, formulation of hypotheses, experimentation, and analysis of the results.

Properties and States of Matter

Matter (Field) is defined as anything that has mass and occupies a volume. Its main features include mass, volume, and density.

States of Aggregation

  • Solid: Constant mass, volume, and shape.
  • Liquid: Constant mass and volume, variable form, and the ability to flow.
  • Gaseous: Constant mass, volume, and shape; it can flow.

Phase Changes and Transitions

  • Fusion (Solid to Liquid): As the temperature rises, the velocity of particles increases enough so that some can overcome the forces of attraction and abandon the position they occupy in the lattice.
  • Boiling (Liquid to Gas): By raising the temperature, the average particle velocity of the liquid rises; more particles escape and transition into gas.
  • Evaporation (Liquid to Gas): This occurs when vaporization takes place at any temperature and exclusively on the liquid's free surface.
  • Sublimation (Solid to Gas): Some particles found on the surface of solid substances have enough energy to escape and turn into steam without the solid melting.

Separation of Heterogeneous Mixtures

These methods are used to separate components such as a liquid and an insoluble solid (e.g., water and sand).

Filtration Process

  1. Filter paper is folded in a circular fashion and placed in the filtration funnel, ensuring that the edges of the filter are not below the funnel.
  2. Filtration involves slowly pouring the mixture onto the axis of a glass rod which touches the lower part of the filter paper.

Decanting Technique

This is used to separate two immiscible liquids with different densities, such as oil and water.

  1. Pour the mixture into the funnel and allow it to stand for substances to separate into layers.
  2. Open the valve (key) to pass the denser liquid first. A narrow drip tube allows the observation of the boundary between the two liquids.
  3. Once the denser liquid has passed, the valve (key) is closed so the other liquid does not pass through.

Magnetic separation is another technique used for heterogeneous mixtures.

A chemical reaction is a process by which one or more substances, called reactants, are transformed into one or more substances with different properties, called products.

Understanding Ions

An ion is an atom or group of electrically charged atoms. A positive ion is a cation and a negative ion is an anion. The formation of ions from atoms is essentially a process of loss or gain of electrons.
