Non-Renewable Energy Sources

Non-renewable energy includes fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) and nuclear energy. These resources cannot be renewed.

Coal

Coal consists of fossilized plant remnants accumulated in swamps and lagoons, used as industrial fuel for heating and thermal power.

  • Advantages: It is abundant and cheap.
  • Drawbacks: It is a highly contaminating fuel; its combustion generates sulfur dioxide and CO2.

Oil

Oil is a mixture of carbon and hydrogen found in solid, liquid, and gaseous states.

  • Advantages: Offers a great variety of products for all uses.
  • Drawbacks: Non-renewable, faces potential future depletion, and causes significant atmospheric pollution through nitrogen dioxide.

Natural Gas

A hydrocarbon mixture composed primarily of methane. Much of the natural gas consumed in Spain comes from Algeria via a gas pipeline across the Strait of Gibraltar.

  • Advantages: Easy extraction, lower transport risk, less polluting than other fossil fuels, and does not produce sulfur dioxide.
  • Drawbacks: Non-renewable; often used as a substitute for other fossil fuels.

Nuclear Energy

Used to generate electricity in nuclear power plants.

  • Advantages: Produces large quantities of energy from a small amount of fuel.
  • Drawbacks: Non-renewable, significant environmental impact, and risk of accidents like Chernobyl.

Energy Consumption and Conservation

Global energy consumption relies on non-renewable sources for over 80% of total needs, causing negative effects on the environment and human society. We must promote rational resource use, transition to renewable energy, and eliminate contaminating sources.

Saving Energy at Home

  • Regulate temperature and operating times for appliances, heating, and refrigeration.
  • Improve thermal insulation in the home.
  • Use warm water sparingly and turn off taps while washing hands.
  • Avoid opening the oven unnecessarily while in use.
  • Use energy-efficient appliances and low-energy lighting.
  • Turn off electronic devices when not in use.
  • Separate waste into the corresponding recycling containers.

Recycling

Recycling involves turning waste into raw materials for manufacturing. Remember:

  • Always place materials in the correct container.
  • Materials cannot be recycled indefinitely.
  • Sometimes the recycling process consumes significant energy or generates environmentally harmful substances.
