The Historical Impact of Qin Unification

The reunification of Qin ended the long-standing situation in which the states were ruled by various princes. This transition was conducive to the stability of the people's lives and the development of social production, aligning with the common aspirations of the people of all ethnic groups at that time. The Qin Dynasty was the first unified multi-ethnic feudal state in Chinese history, and Qin Shihuang became the first emperor in Chinese history.

Standardization and Centralization of Power

After the reunification of the six countries, the standardization of weights and measures, Chinese characters, and currency had an epoch-making influence on China's historical development. During the reign of Emperor Qin Shihuang, the most important feature of centralization was that military and political power was monopolized by the emperor.

Administrative Systems and Consolidation

On the one hand, Qin Shihuang created a far-reaching emperor system, established the Sangong and Jiuqing system in the central government, and promoted the county system in the local areas. On the other hand, he adopted a series of measures to consolidate and unify the nation, such as:

  • Unified text, weights, measures, and currency.
  • The destruction of weapons and the defense of Sichuan.
  • The extensive cultivation of roads.
  • The "burning of books and burying of scholars" (burning books and pits Confucianism).

With the implementation of measures such as further levying the Xiongnu and the subjugation of the Nanfu Baiyue, a unified multi-ethnic feudal state was formed. However, the rule of the Qin Dynasty was extremely brutal; the endless military service, servitude, and tyrannical punishment brought enormous disaster and suffering to the people.

The Legacy of Shang Yang’s Reforms

The Shang Yang Reform Act (of the Qin State) laid the foundation for the unification of the Qin Dynasty through three key pillars:

  1. Political Foundation: The division of the waste in the Shang Yang Reformation and the implementation of the county system strengthened the centralization of power, laying a political foundation for the reunification of Qin.
  2. Economic Foundation: By emphasizing agriculture and restraining businesses, rewarding farming and weaving, and promoting agricultural production, the state flourished. The unification of national weights and measures promoted economic development and provided sufficient material security for Qin's reunification.
  3. Military Foundation: By rewarding military merit according to the achievements of the lords and soldiers, the military foundation was laid for the reunification of Qin to successfully defeat its enemies.
