🧾 WRITTEN SPEECH STRUCTURE (IGCSE)

Even though it’s written, your speech should sound like someone could say it aloud — clear, persuasive, and engaging.
Here’s the ideal structure that Cambridge expects 👇

🩵 1. Introduction (Opening paragraph)

👉 Goal: grab attention + introduce topic + state your opinion.

Include:

  • A greeting
“Good morning everyone,” or “Ladies and gentlemen,”

  • A hook — something interesting (a question, quote, or fact)
“Have you ever wondered how technology is changing our lives?”

  • Your main idea / purpose
“Today, I want to talk about why we must use technology responsibly.”

Tips:

  • Keep it short (3–4 lines max).

  • Make the reader curious or emotionally engaged.

💬 2. Body (2–3 paragraphs)

👉 Goal: develop your argument with reasons, examples, and persuasive techniques.

Each paragraph = 1 clear point

Paragraph 1 – Your strongest point

  • Explain your first argument clearly.

  • Use evidence, examples, or logic.
“Firstly, technology helps us learn and connect faster than ever before.”

  • Add rhetorical devices (question, repetition, emotive words).
“Isn’t it amazing how a single click can change a life?”

Paragraph 2 – Another key idea

  • Add a new argument or perspective.

  • Use linking words: Secondly, Moreover, On the other hand.
“However, we must be aware of the dangers of overuse.”

Paragraph 3 – Counterargument + refutation

  • Present an opposing view briefly:
“Some people argue that technology does more harm than good.”

  • Then refute it with reasoning:
“But in reality, it depends on how we choose to use it.”

🔚 3. Conclusion (Closing paragraph)

👉 Goal: summarize + inspire + leave a strong final impression.

Include:

  • Restate your main idea
“Technology itself isn’t the problem — our choices are.”

  • Call to action or emotional ending
“So let’s use it wisely, for learning, for helping, for changing the world.”

  • Optionally, repeat a key word or phrase from the start for impact.

Example closing line:

“Together, we can shape a smarter and kinder future.”
