Fundamental Concepts of Perception

Stimulus: Any form of energy to which we respond.

Sensation: What we feel in response to information that comes through sensory organs.

Perception: The way the brain organizes these feelings to make sense of the world.

Psychophysics

Psychophysics is the study of the relationship between the physical dimensions of stimuli and our psychological perceptions of them.

Thresholds of Perception

  • Absolute Threshold: The minimum intensity of a stimulus necessary for it to be perceived.
  • Difference Threshold: The smallest intensity difference required to perceive a distinction between two stimuli.

The Human Visual System

The human eye perceives electromagnetic energy in the form of light waves. The most important and complex part of the eye is the retina, which is formed by neurons, glial cells, and photoreceptor cells called rods and cones, which are sensitive to light and darkness.

Color Vision

We perceive primary colors—red, green, and blue—and all other colors result from the interaction of these three mechanisms. The opponent-process theory explains the phenomenon of afterimages.

Common Vision Disorders

Vision problems include glaucoma, myopia, presbyopia, amblyopia, astigmatism, cataracts, night blindness, and color blindness.

The Auditory System

We differentiate sounds based on two measures:

  • Intensity: Measured in decibels, describing the amplitude of sound waves.
  • Tone: Depends on the frequency of waves and is measured in hertz.

Hair cells in the ear act as auditory receptors, and auditory nerve fibers transmit information to the brain. We perceive specific sounds based on the location of the basilar membrane being stimulated.

Hearing Loss

  • Sensorineural Deafness: Occurs when hair cells are damaged, often by loud noises.
  • Conductive Deafness: Caused by the breakdown of time or defects in the bones of the middle ear.

Pain and Chemical Senses

Pain Management

The brain produces endorphins, substances that reduce or eliminate pain, often triggered by fear, stress, or physical effort.

Impact of Loud Music

High-intensity and high-frequency sound waves can cause permanent damage to hair cells, leading to hearing loss.

Chemical Senses

These include the gustatory (taste) and olfactory (smell) senses.

Perceptual Organization and Consciousness

Gestalt Laws

Law of Proximity: The relationship between different objects in a scene provides information regarding overall size and structure.

Illusions

Perceptions are often triggered or distorted by ambiguous contexts.

Consciousness

Refers to the knowledge we have of the world that surrounds us"
