Plastic Repair Methods

Plastic repair can be achieved through various techniques, including acetone welding, thermal welding, and structural adhesion.

Thermal Welding

Thermal welding involves applying heat to soften the material. Note that you may only weld nature-identical materials (same plastic type).

Equipment

  • Air welder
  • Speed welding nozzle or wedge
  • Rotary cutter
  • Support and safety rods

Operation

Connect to the power source, adjust temperature and airflow, position the nozzle, and allow the device to warm up.

Preparation of Welding

  3. Create a V-groove (2/3 depth, 5 mm width).
  4. Ensure the rod protrudes 1–2 mm above the surface.

Tack Welding

Weld the base of the crack to stabilize the equipment.

Welding Filler Material

  1. Select nozzle and temperature.
  2. Insert rod (protruding 3 mm) and begin welding parallel to the crack.
  3. If too hot, remove the nozzle to a 3 mm distance from the surface.
  4. Keep the rod aligned manually without excessive heating.
  5. Remove the apparatus at the end of the weld.
  6. Cut the rod once cold; reinforcement may be added.

Pendulum Welding

For tight holes, push the rod manually while applying heat with a standard nozzle.

Correction of Deformities

  1. Identify plastic.
  2. Set temperature.
  3. Place smooth, non-porous wood over the area.
  4. Cool and remove the wood.

Acetone Welding Process

  1. Identify plastic.
  2. Create plastic scrapes.
  3. Combine scrapes with acetone in a metal container.
  4. Shake until a uniform mixture forms.
  5. Apply to both sides of the break.
  6. Strengthen the union once placed.
  7. Examine and apply additional acetone if necessary.

Adhesive Process

  1. Identify plastic.
  2. Clean the area thoroughly with a degreaser.
  3. Sand the surface.
  4. Sand the inner area with an abrasive disc.
  5. Form a 2 mm slit in the break.
  6. Repeat cleaning.
  7. Apply primer.
  8. Apply adhesive and fiber (interior).
  9. Apply to the exterior.
  10. Dry and sand.

Glass Fibers

Utilize rovings, mats, and woven fabrics for structural reinforcement.
