Pituitary Hormones and the Pituitary Gland
The pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain and is divided into anterior and posterior lobes.
The Anterior Lobe (Adenohypophysis)
The anterior lobe, or adenohypophysis, secretes the following hormones:
- Somatotropic Growth Hormone (GH): Stimulates growth.
- Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH): Controls the secretions of the adrenal gland cortex.
- Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH): Controls the production of thyroid hormones.
- Prolactin (PRL): Stimulates the development of mammary glands and the production of milk.
- Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH): Activates sperm production and the maturation of oocytes.
- Luteinizing Hormone (LH): Stimulates ovulation and the production of testosterone by the testicles. It also regulates corpus luteum formation in the ovary.
The Posterior Lobe (Neurohypophysis)
The posterior lobe, or neurohypophysis, secretes two hormones:
- Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH or Vasopressin): Stimulates the absorption of water by the kidney. Its insufficiency (diabetes insipidus) prevents urine from concentrating.
- Oxytocin: Induces smooth muscle contraction of the uterus during labor.

Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease.
The Concept of Vaccines
Vaccines are preparations containing artificial or weakened pathogens capable of causing a disabled immune response, allowing the body to manufacture antibodies.
Disease: An alteration of a body part or the whole body, such that the welfare of the individual is affected negatively.
Understanding Earth's Relief and Geomorphology
Relief: Formed by the irregular and uneven surface of the Earth. Terrestrial relief is the result of the interaction of internal geological processes, such as those forming mountains and ocean trenches, and external geological processes that erode the rocks of the planet's surface.
The terrestrial relief is not fixed or static; it is constantly changing, though we rarely see these changes.
Geomorphology: The science of geology that studies land relief: how it originates, under what conditions, the actors involved, and the resulting forms.
Factors That Determine Relief
- Climate: Water determines the type of geological agent that will act in a certain area of the Earth's surface (e.g., ice in cold climates, water in warm climates).
- The Structure and Arrangement of Materials: Sedimentary rocks tend to be arranged in horizontal layers; however, over geologic time and because of internal geological processes, they can be deformed, folded, and fractured.
- Type of Rock: Examples include slate or granitic rocks. In Spain, clay, shale, quartzite, limestone, and granite predominate. Each rock type has specific characteristics. Some rocks erode more easily than others, as the separation of mineral particles differs between rock types. For this reason, the resulting reliefs are very different.
