Precious Artifact: A Martian Engineer's Journey

Milt Biskle was a reconstruction engineer working on Mars. He dreamed of bringing his family to the colony, yet he harbored a persistent, unsettling feeling that something was fundamentally wrong. Seeking the truth about the war, he consulted his psychiatrist, Dr. DeWinter, who arranged for him to travel to Earth.

Upon reaching Earth, Milt met his guide, Mary. He soon discovered a harrowing reality: humanity had lost the war, and no one had survived on Earth. His wife and children were merely illusions. Devastated, Milt contemplated suicide but eventually chose to accept his reality and move forward. He asked Mary to find him a cat, as she claimed animals had survived the conflict. However, this was another deception; Mary provided him with a sophisticated robotic imitation of a cat to help him cope with his existence.

We Can Remember It for You Wholesale

Douglas Quail dreamed of traveling to Mars, but the trip was far too expensive for his budget. He visited a company called Rekal, which specialized in implanting artificial memories into the human brain. During the procedure, the technicians discovered that Quail had actually been to Mars, and they refused to perform the implant.

When Quail returned home, government agents threatened his life, forcing him into hiding. The agents eventually tracked him down using a transmitter. Through a remote connection, they revealed that his dreams of being a superhero were actually suppressed memories of his true past. When Rekal attempted to process him, they confirmed that Quail was indeed the secret agent he had dreamed of being.

Sales Pitch: The Persistent Robot

Ed Morris works on Jupiter but resides on Earth, enduring a grueling daily commute filled with relentless advertisements. Exhausted by the constant commercialism, he complains to his wife throughout the night. Shortly after, a self-selling robot named Fasrad appears and insists on moving in with them.

Ed takes the robot onto his ship and drives at full speed, intentionally causing an accident to destroy the machine. Although the robot's arms are broken, it remains a persistent nuisance. Despite the chaos, Ed finds a silver lining: the accident inadvertently fulfills his dream of traveling to Proxima.
