The Role of Communication in an Organization
Communication is the element that unifies and binds the parties within an organization. Through communication, information is transmitted so that orders can be issued and task compliance can be verified. It is a vital means used in an organization to achieve change, and it also allows for the integration of different administrative functions.
Types of Communication Flow
Communication can be categorized by its direction:
- Vertical or Downward: Occurs when a superior communicates with a subordinate.
- Vertical or Upward (Ascendant): Occurs when a subordinate communicates with a superior.
- Horizontal or Lateral: Occurs between persons of the same hierarchical level.
- Oblique Downward: Occurs when a superior communicates with a subordinate at different levels belonging to a different hierarchical chain of command.
- Oblique Upward (Ascendant): Occurs when a subordinate communicates at a level higher than theirs and belongs to a different hierarchical chain of command.
Methods of Communication
Communication can be performed using the following methods:
- Written Communication
- Oral Communication
- Non-verbal Communication: Uses means other than voice, such as gestures, body movements, signs, and facial expressions.
- Brochures
- House-Organ: These are magazine-style leaflets published by some companies, intended to inform staff about particular aspects of the company's internal affairs.
