Oil Extraction

  • Rotation Method: A system of coupled tubes driven by a motor that turns and drills downward.

  • Site Utilization: Calculations suggest that oil reservoirs are typically only utilized between 25% and 50% of their total capacity.

  • Water Injection: To increase reservoir profitability, water injection systems are used in parallel wells. While oil is extracted from one well, water is injected into a nearby well to maintain pressure.

  • Distillation: A fundamental operation for oil refining, with the objective of separating different components of crude oil through heat.
  • Conversion: To achieve more profitable refining and match market demand, it is necessary to process products using conversion techniques.
  • Treatment: Before marketing, products must undergo various treatments to remove or convert undesirable compounds, such as sulfur derivatives.

Classification of Oil

  • Petroleum Asphalt: Black, viscous, and high-density. Distillation produces little naphtha and fuel oil, resulting primarily in asphalt and waste.
  • Paraffinic Crude Oil: Light-colored, low-density, and fluid. It yields more naphtha than asphaltic oil, and paraffin is separated to produce lubricants.
  • Mixed Petroleums: These possess characteristics and yields that fall between the two main varieties mentioned above.
