Outfoxed: A Critique of Journalistic Integrity
In my opinion, Outfoxed highlights a significant issue that discredits modern journalism. It demonstrates how Fox News is driven more by political ideologies than by the veracity of facts. I believe this is a major problem for the industry, as it is a trend occurring in other countries, albeit perhaps not as exaggerated as on Fox TV.
I struggle to understand how journalists become involved in this game. I am not referring to the editors who fear losing their jobs, but rather the TV presenters who attack guests and ridicule them to assert the supremacy of their own ideology. Such individuals are not journalists; they are propagandists, and they are a dishonor to the profession.
The downside of the documentary is that all those interviewed are ex-workers, which may lead viewers to believe they are speaking out of spite. In my opinion, for greater credibility, the documentary would have benefited from the perspective of a current Fox employee.
Black Mirror: A Reflection of Societal Decay
I believe this TV series serves as a profound critique of television and society. In the episode discussed in class, the public participates in a poll regarding whether the Prime Minister should perform a lewd act with a pig to save the princess. This scenario highlights the morbid fascination with watching a leader humiliated.
The problem is not the poll itself, but the impact of the spectacle. Everyone watched the show. In my opinion, if you are genuinely concerned for the princess, you might vote “yes” in the poll, but you would never actually watch the act itself. However, this society demands to witness the moral destruction of others for its own satisfaction.
I think it is a powerful critique because it is original and illustrates the potential ultimate consequences of this type of mentality.
The Value of Investigative Journalism
My favorite form of journalism is investigative journalism, as it seeks to uncover and expose illegal behavior by governments, corporations, and other powerful entities. I prefer this style because it is more complex than simply publishing current events. It requires:
- Extensive time spent searching for information
- Conducting numerous interviews
- Analyzing complex databases
I also value this type of journalism because I believe it is more transcendent for society. Being informed is necessary, but it is even more vital to know information that affects your life directly. Without investigative journalism, many other forms of reporting could not exist.
