Navigating the Microsoft Teams Desktop App

The Microsoft Teams desktop application features a left-hand navigation bar containing Activity, Chat, Teams, Calendar, Calls, and Files.

1. Managing Your Activity Feed

I typically start my day in the activity feed to review incoming information. Use the filter button to triage important updates. You can filter by:

  • Unread
  • @ Mentions
  • Replies
  • Following
  • Likes
  • Missed calls
  • Voicemail
  • Apps
  • Trending

Filtering by @ mentions is an effective way to create a daily to-do list.

2. Organizing Chats

The Chat section handles private one-on-one and group conversations. To stay efficient, pin frequently used chats to the top of your list, while keeping recent chats accessible underneath.

3. Collaborating in Teams and Channels

The Teams tab is the hub for collaboration. Organizations can structure teams by department or project. Each team contains channels—shared workspaces for communicating about specific topics.

Understanding Channel Notifications

  • Bold text: Indicates new, unread information.
  • Decorations: Signify an important message.
  • @ Symbol: Indicates you have been mentioned.

4. Managing Conversations

Within a channel, use the reply button to keep related messages threaded together. You can also like or save messages to reference them later.

5. Utilizing Inline Translation

Microsoft Teams supports 44 languages, allowing for seamless global collaboration. If a colleague writes in a different language, use the inline translation feature to convert the text into your preferred language instantly.
