Benefits of the CAR Framework

There are considerable benefits to using the CAR method.

  • Versatility: This method is applicable to any part of the job process, from your CV and cover letter to your LinkedIn profile. We recommend applying the CAR method to all aspects of your job search to get familiar with the structure prior to the interview stage.
  • Effective Communication: The CAR method helps provide clear and concise answers to interview questions that demonstrate your value while also reflecting your ability to communicate efficiently.

💡 Pro-Tips: Before any behavioral interview, it is advisable to compile a series of anecdotes or success stories. Ideally, you should keep track of your achievements throughout your academic and professional experiences (including internships), but at the very least, you should have three to four stories prepared leading up to the interview.

In addition to success stories, memorize a few instances when you failed but learned something from the experience. These anecdotes should be brief and have a favorable connotation, even if they define failure. For example, you might not have won a bid, but you managed to find an efficient way to prepare bidding reports.

Example: Thinking on Your Feet

Question: Can you give an example of a time you had to think on your feet and make a quick decision?

Context: During my last internship at an NHS-affiliated clinic as a cashier, I was confronted by an attendant alleging an overcharge for medicines and services.

Action: I had to think quickly and came up with a two-pronged approach. I reassured the attendant that I would escalate the issue to the relevant authorities internally, encouraging them to let us continue the treatment so that there was no adverse effect on the patient’s health.

Result: The attendant calmed down instantly and was convinced we had their best intentions in mind. At a later stage, they reviewed all rate cards and invoices and were convinced there was no overcharging; the patient recovered quickly thanks to seamless treatment.

Example: Handling a Tough Situation

Question: Can you describe an instance when you handled a tough situation at work?

Context: I was made aware of an ethical violation by one of my closest friends at a previous job at a London bank. I was deeply conflicted as they were my most intimate friend at the bank, but their action was in contrast with our commitment to customers; thus, I had to decide how I wanted to proceed.

Action: I decided to immediately let my superiors know about the violation without any delay. After that, I spoke to my friend and let him know that I had reported their action and tried to explain as calmly as possible that it was a strictly professional decision.

Result: My superiors appreciated that I chose to act without bias and saved the bank from any legal consequences. My friend also understood the spirit in which I took the decision and accepted the outcomes.
