General Media Communication Characteristics

Social media consists of the press, radio, TV, and the internet. Through these, the issuer or issuers' main aim is to inform and appeal to a heterogeneous and massive public. In this communication process, the following characteristics are present:

  • Unidirectional: The issuer, whether a journalist or not, delivers a message individually, and the receiver receives it either alone or in groups.
  • Message Content: The message sometimes communicates objective information, while in other cases, it involves the subjective interpretation of events of interest to the receiver.
  • Channel: The channel through which information is transmitted requires the use of advanced technologies.
  • Code: The code varies depending on the medium; in the press, the written code is primary, while in radio, the sound code highlights the message, and in TV, images become important.

The Purpose of Mass Media

The main purpose of the media is information. In addition to informing, the media also shapes opinion through the selection and assessment of the facts disclosed. We must not forget the goal of entertaining, which appears especially in audiovisual media. Furthermore, propaganda occupies an important place due to the presence of advertisements for products or trademarks, as well as ideological values transmitted across all media.

  • Objectives: Radio has the major objective of reporting, publicizing news quickly and immediately, and providing entertaining and varied programs.

Language Functions in Broadcast Media
