  1. THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY The most democratic organ, in which each state (193) gets one vote, no matter how big or small, rich or poor. The General Assembly has the competence to discuss and make recommendations on all matters that fall within the scope of the UN Charter.

  1. THE SECURITY COUNCIL The most powerful organ. Its primary responsibility is to maintain peace and security.

It is composed of 15 members, 5 permanent with veto power (United States, China, France, Russia, and the United Kingdom) and 10 elected by the GA for 2 years.

The Security Council is the only organ that can impose sanctions on states or deploy military forces on behalf of the international community to keep the peace in certain areas, regions, or countries.

  1. THE SECRETARIAT its responsibilities are to gather information, coordinate, and conduct activities. The Secretary-General (5-year term) is the chief administrative officer and spokesperson.

  2. THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCILIt is composed of 54 members, which are elected by the General Assembly (3-year terms). 

The council coordinates economic and social welfare programs & coordinates the action of specialized agencies (Food and Agriculture Organization, World Health Organization, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

  1. THE TRUSTEE COUNCIL It was established to manage/administer the trustee territory (supervision has ended).

  2. THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICEThe principal judicial organ of the UN.

It was established in June 1945 by the UN Charter, and it began to work in April 1946.

The Court is at the Peace Palace (The Hague).

Out of the six principal organs of the UN, it is the only one not located in New York.

Its role is to settle, in accordance with IL, legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized UN organs and specialized agencies. It is formed by 15 judges.
