Innovation is the process and outcome of creating something new and valuable. Schumpeter argued that innovation arises from new combinations made by an entrepreneur, resulting in:
- A new product
- A new process
- Opening a new market
- A new way of organizing the business
- New sources of supply
Characteristics of Innovation
- Object or Target of Change: Innovation involves changing an object or target, which can be a product, process, individual's lifestyle, organization's strategy, or a society's culture.
- Magnitude of Deviation: Innovations vary in extent or magnitude, representing the degree to which they deviate from the past.
- Problem-Solving Focus: Innovation is closely related to problem-solving, as generating and implementing ideas for change always involve challenges.
- Impact and Significance: A key characteristic of innovation is its impact, measured by the significance or range of its effects.
Types of Innovation (Oslo Manual)
In business and economics, innovation is often categorized into five types:
- Product Innovation: Introducing a new or substantially improved good or service with enhanced functional characteristics or technical abilities.
- Process Innovation: Implementing a new or significantly improved production or delivery method.
- Marketing Innovation: Developing new marketing methods, including product design, packaging, promotion, or pricing strategies.
- Organizational Innovation (Social Innovation): Creating new organizations, business practices, ways of running organizations, or new organizational behavior.
- Business Model Innovation: Changing the way business is conducted to capture value.

System Level
- Incremental: New series of cars, planes, computers, TVs (doing better what we already do)
- Radical: New generation (MP3 and download as a substitute for CDs) (new for the company)
- Systemic: Steam engine, ICT, biotechnology, nanotechnology (new for the world)
Component Level
- Incremental: Improvement of components (doing better what we already do)
- Radical: New components for existing systems (new for the company)
- Systemic: Advanced materials improving component properties (new for the world)
What is Creativity?
Teresa Amabile identifies three ingredients of creativity:
- Domain Skills: Expertise developed through experience and knowledge in a specific field.
- Creative Thinking Skills: Abilities such as seeking novelty, embracing diversity, being independent and persistent, and maintaining high standards.
