The Role of Television in Modern Society

It is a well-known fact that television, and in particular the news, informs us of all the events that occur daily. Through this medium, we stay updated on positive developments, negative news, interesting events, sports, and technological innovations. However, television is also a business, and its primary objectives often revolve around capturing audiences and generating revenue.

Entertainment and Social Connection

On one hand, television entertains us during our free time with:

  • Soap operas
  • Series
  • Films
  • Documentaries

In this aspect, it serves as a vital instrument for many, such as the elderly who may have limited mobility. They are often grateful for television, as it makes their daily lives more engaging and lively.

The Priority of Informative Journalism

On the other hand, we must not forget that television has an essential function: to inform the public about significant global events, including:

  • Economic shifts
  • Political developments
  • International conflicts
  • Terrorist attacks

From my perspective, it is far more important to inform citizens about current affairs than to prioritize entertainment programs or sports results. Reporting on critical events, such as the London attacks, should take precedence over lighthearted variety shows.

Media Ethics and Business Interests

While television is a business driven by profit and ratings, I believe that channels should interrupt regular programming to provide special news coverage during major crises. Unfortunately, in Spain, the approach to breaking news often seems less responsive than in other European countries. For instance, while the rest of the world covered the London attacks extensively, many in Spain had to rely on social media platforms like Twitter for updates.

Conclusion

We live in a highly consumerist world where financial gain is often prioritized. However, exceptions must be made when public safety and awareness are at stake. Behind every news story, there are families affected who deserve to be informed. I hope that in the future, when events of such importance occur, Spanish television executives will prioritize the rapid dissemination of breaking news.
