Georgia Driver Licensing Requirements

Instructional Permit (Class CP)

• The holder must be accompanied by a person at least 21 years of age who is licensed to drive a Class C vehicle at all times.

Provisional License (Class D)

Granted to individuals 16 and 17 years of age who meet the following criteria:

• Held a Class CP license for 12 months and one day with no major traffic violations.
• No violations resulting in mandatory permit suspension.
• Completed the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP).
• Passed a road skills test.
• Successfully completed an approved driver training course (at least 30 hours of theoretical and 6 hours of practical instruction).
• Driving is prohibited between midnight and 5:00 AM.
• Passenger Restrictions:
  • First 6 months: Only immediate family members allowed.
  • Second 6 months: Only one passenger under 21 who is not immediate family.
  • After 12 months: Only three passengers under 21 who are not immediate family.
• Must be free from major traffic convictions for 12 months preceding the Class C application.

Class C License

Class D holders may apply for a Class C license at age 18, provided they have no convictions for:

• Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
• Using a motor vehicle to flee or elude a police officer
• Racing on highways or streets
• Reckless driving
• Hit and run or leaving the scene of a crash
• Any violation resulting in 4 or more points against the license
