Weathering Processes

Alterations in rock caused by the atmosphere and living organisms are known as weathering. We distinguish two primary types:

  • Physical Weathering: The mechanical breakdown of rocks into fragments due to sudden temperature changes or frost wedging (gelifraction).
  • Chemical Weathering: The alteration of the chemical composition of the rock, transforming it into grains of sand.

External Geological Agents

External geological processes modify and destroy the terrain. The most common processes are erosion, sediment transport, and deposition. These are driven by external geological agents, including water, ice, and wind, manifesting as rivers, lakes, glaciers, ocean currents, and waves.

Landforms and Features

Key geological features include: Barranco, bay, circus, cliff, meander, wave, torrent, dune, volcanic crater, magma chamber, cone, and stack.

Wind Erosion

When wind is loaded with sand, it erodes rocks through a process called wind abrasion. This requires specific conditions:

  • Presence of small, loose materials.
  • Sparse vegetation.

These conditions typically occur in desert and coastal areas. Notably, the erosive action of wind is often less intense than water erosion, even in desert environments.

River Dynamics

  • Upper Course: The river erodes the soil, forming V-shaped valleys.
  • Middle Course: The river leaves the mountains, the slope smooths, and the river erodes the channel, widening its margins.
  • Lower Course: The river runs through a valley with gentle, open slopes, transporting only very fine materials.

Common Rock Types

  • Pumice: A light-colored, porous rock containing air-filled holes, characterized by a vesicular texture.
  • Conglomerate: Formed by grains larger than 2 mm (clasts) bound together by a finer material (matrix).
  • Slate: Composed of grains visible only under a microscope, featuring flat, parallel plates that allow for perfect foliation.
  • Granite: Typically gray or pinkish, composed of quartz, feldspar, and mica. It is the most abundant rock in the Earth's crust.
