The Excretory System

The excretory system is responsible for eliminating waste substances from the body. The main organs involved are:

• The kidneys: They filter the blood and produce urine.
• The lungs: They eliminate carbon dioxide (CO2).
• The liver: It processes bilirubin (a product of red blood cell breakdown) and excretes it with the feces.
• The sweat glands: They produce sweat to regulate body temperature.

The Urinary System

The urinary system is a key part of the excretory system and is made up of:

• Ureters: Tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder.
• Urinary bladder: A muscular organ that stores urine.
• Urethra: The tube through which urine leaves the body. In men, the urethra is shared by the urinary and reproductive systems, while in women it is only for the urinary system.

The Nephron: The Functional Unit of the Kidney

Each kidney has approximately one million nephrons. These are responsible for filtering the blood and producing urine through three processes:

Urine Production in the Nephrons

• Filtration: Blood passes through the capillaries of the glomerulus, and water, glucose, vitamins, amino acids, and wastes like urea are filtered out. Blood cells and proteins are too large to pass through.
• Reabsorption: The fluid passes through the renal tubule, and useful substances like water, glucose, vitamins, and some ions are reabsorbed and return to the blood. Here, the amount of water in the urine is regulated.
• Secretion: The remaining wastes are added to the fluid to form urine.

Urine travels from the nephrons to the renal pelvis, then to the ureters, and finally to the bladder. When the bladder is full, urination occurs through the urethra. Urine is a clear, yellow liquid, and its main waste product is urea. In summary, the excretory system, with the urinary system as its main player, is responsible for filtering the blood to eliminate wastes and maintain the balance of our body.
