Essential Nutrients and Dietary Fundamentals

Vitamins

  • Vitamin A: Supports vision, regulates growth, and helps prevent infections.
  • Vitamin C: Essential for tissue formation and wound healing.
  • Vitamin D: Facilitates nutrient absorption in the intestines, such as calcium. Deficiency reduces mineral absorption.

Iron

Iron is essential for the transport of oxygen and hemoglobin. It is easily lost, particularly through sweat and menstruation. Sources: lentils, eggs, and cereals.

Minerals

Minerals are important for water regulation and are fundamental for muscle contraction. Excess intake, particularly of salt and calcium, can cause fluid retention and hypertension.

Water (H2O)

It is vital to recover daily water losses from urine, sweat, and chemical reactions. For athletes, water regulates body temperature and helps prevent disorders such as muscle cramping.

Isotonic Drinks

These are not performance-enhancing substances. Their composition includes water, minerals, and glucose for quick absorption. Mineral salts consumed during physical exercise are not recovered instantly.

Fiber

Fiber consists of plant-based substances that are not used as energy sources; they form the walls of plant cells. There are two types:

  • Soluble: Slows the uptake of blood sugar after digestion and interacts with cholesterol. Sources: apples, oats, citrus, kiwi.
  • Insoluble: Provides structure to fruits, vegetables, and cereals (found in the shell). While the human body cannot derive energy from it, it is useful for dietary health. Sources: corn, rice, whole grains.

Obesity and Prevention

Obesity is weight gain caused by an increase in fat reserves beyond the normal range for an individual. It occurs when there is a lack of coordination between energy intake and energy expenditure.

Associated Disorders

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease

Prevention

Prevention involves reducing caloric intake, increasing physical activity, and maintaining motivation.

Balanced Nutrition

A balanced diet should be varied and provide sufficient energy for metabolic processes while ensuring all necessary nutrients are consumed in appropriate quantities. The Mediterranean diet is widely considered one of the healthiest models for balanced nutrition.
