Essential English Grammar Sentence Transformations

  • 1. TOO / ENOUGH
    (too + adj → not + adj opposite + enough)
    He is too young to drive. → He isn’t old enough to drive.
  • 2. SO / SUCH
    (such + (a/an) + adj + noun → so + adj)
    It was such a difficult exam. → The exam was so difficult.
  • 3. ALTHOUGH / DESPITE
    (although + S+V → despite + noun / -ing)
    Although it was raining, we went out. → Despite the rain, we went out.
  • 4. BECAUSE / BECAUSE OF
    (because + S+V → because of + noun)
    We stayed home because it was raining. → We stayed home because of the rain.
  • 5. IF / UNLESS
    (if not → unless)
    If you don’t study, you will fail. → You will fail unless you study.
  • 6. USED TO
    (past habit → used to + inf)
    I played football when I was a child. → I used to play football.
  • 7. PASSIVE VOICE
    (obj + be (same tense) + pp)
    They built this house in 2000. → This house was built in 2000.

    (present → past)
    “I am tired,” she said. → She said that she was tired.
  • 9. COMPARATIVES
    (opposite)
    This book is better than that one. → That book is worse than this one.
  • 10. AS…AS
    (not as + adj + as)
    This car is faster than that one. → That car isn’t as fast as this one.
  • 11. RELATIVE CLAUSES (WHO/WHICH/THAT)
    (joining sentences)
    The boy is my friend. He is playing football. → The boy who is playing football is my friend.
  • 12. WHOSE
    (his/her → whose)
    I have a friend. His brother is a doctor. → I have a friend whose brother is a doctor.
