Environmental Issues

As the human population and its needs increase, problems have emerged that affect the soil, various forms of life, water, and the atmosphere. When human activities pollute, deplete resources, or harm the natural development of an environment, it creates an environmental problem.

Classification of Environmental Impacts

• Global: Affects the entire planet, including global warming and ozone layer depletion.
• Regional: Affects a country or group of countries, such as biodiversity loss, acid rain, deforestation, and marine pollution.
• Local: Affects a small area like a city or province, including urban smog, groundwater pollution, desertification, and visual or noise pollution.

Plate Tectonics

Types of Plate Boundaries

• Convergence: Two plates meet; one rises to form a ridge while the other sinks into the magma and melts, creating mountains.
• Transform: Two plates move laterally, causing no change in relief height but altering continental shapes, resulting in faults or cracks.
• Divergent: Two plates move away from each other, leaving a cavity occupied by oceans. Magma rises to form underwater volcanic chains, ocean ridges, and rifts.

Relief Formation Processes

Relief is shaped by two primary forces:

• Internal (Endogenous): Originates from inside the Earth.
• External (Exogenous): Modifies the Earth's crust through erosion or the accumulation of material (sedimentation).

The internal and external processes act as two opposing forces that tend to balance the Earth's surface.

Natural Phenomena and Disasters

Natural phenomena—such as floods, droughts, hurricanes, avalanches, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis—become disasters only when they cause loss of life or property. For example, an earthquake in an uninhabited desert is merely a natural event.

Vulnerability Factors

Developing countries with low income or populations inhabiting unsafe areas face increased vulnerability to these natural events.
