RC Phase Shift Oscillator

Design of the amplifier: Select transistor BC107. It can provide a gain of more than 29 because its minimum hFE is 100.

DC biasing conditions: VCC = 12 V, IC = 2 mA, VRC = 40% of VCC = 4.8 V, VRE = 10% of VCC = 1.2 V, VCE = 50% of VCC = 6 V.

Design of RC: VRC = IC × RC, RC = VRC / IC = 4.8 / 2 = 2.4 kΩ.

Design of RE: VRE = IE × RE, RE = VRE / IE = 1.2 / 2 mA = 600 Ω.

Design of R1 and R2: IB = IC / hFE = 2 mA / 100 = 20 µA. Assume the current through R1 = 10 IB and through R2 = 9 IB to avoid loading the potential divider by the base current.

VR2 = voltage across R2 = VBE + VRE = 0.7 + 1.2 = 1.9 V, VR2 = 9 IB × R2, R2 = VR2 / 9 IB = 10.5 kΩ.

VR1 = voltage across R1 = VCC − VR2, VR1 = 10 IB × R1, R1 = VR1 / 10 IB = 50.5 kΩ.

Design of bypass capacitor CE: XCE ≤ RE / 10 = 60 Ω, CE = 1 / (2π f × RE / 10) = 2.65 × 10-3 F = 4.7 µF.

Design of frequency selective network: Required frequency of oscillation is 1 kHz, f = 1 / (2π R C √(6 + 4RC/R)) = 1 kHz. The frequency determined by R and RC must be selected to avoid loading of the amplifier, so R = 2RC = 2 × 2.4 kΩ = 4.8 kΩ ≈ 4.7 kΩ. Then C = 0.0117 µF ≈ 0.01 µF.

Power Amplifier

2Q==

Class B power amplifier, Q1 = SL100, Q2 = SK100.

Z

Class AB power amplifier, Q1 = SL100, Q2 = SK100.

Class B power amplifier: Power output required P = 100 mW, VCC = 6 V, VCE1 = VCE2 = 50% VCC = 3 V. Let RL = 8 Ω. Then P = IC2 RL = 100 mW, so IC = 112 mA. From the circuit: VCC = IC RC + VCE, i.e. RC = (VCC − VCE) / IC = 26.7 Ω ≈ 27 Ω with 1/2 W. Let CC = 10 µF.

Class AB power amplifier: Power output required P = 100 mW, VCC = 12 V, β = 50, VCE1 = VCE2 = 50% VCC = 6 V. Let RL = 8 Ω. Then P = IC2 RL = 100 mW, so IC = 112 mA. From the circuit: RC = (VCC − VCE) / IC = 53.5 Ω ≈ 56 Ω with 1/2 W. From the input side: VCC = 2VR + 2VD, so VR = (VCC − 2VD) / 2 = 5.4 V. IB = IC / β = 2.24 mA. Assuming 10 IB flows through R: R = VR / 10 IB = 241 Ω ≈ 220 Ω. Let CC = 10 µF.

Choose NPN transistor BC548. Let VCC = 9 V, IC = IE = 2 mA, β = hfe = 200, S = 5. To fix the operating point in the middle of the load line, assume 50% of VCC is dropped across VCE. For stability, assume 10% of VCC is dropped across RE.

VCE = 50% of VCC = 4.5 V, VRE = 10% of VCC = 0.9 V, RE = VRE / IE = 0.9 / (2 × 10-3) = 450 Ω ≈ 470 Ω. VRC = VCC − VCE − VRE = 3.6 V, RC = VRC / IC = 3.6 / (2 × 10-3) = 1.8 kΩ.

Assume stability factor S = 5: S = (1 + β)(1 + RB/RE) / (1 + β + RB/RE), giving RB = 1.93 kΩ.

VR2 = VBE + VRE, and VR2 = VCC (R2 / (R1 + R2)) = VCC (RB / R1). Thus 1.5 = 9 (1.93 / R1), R1 = 12 kΩ, and R2 = 2.2 kΩ.

Coupling and bypass capacitors: Minimum operating frequency f = 50 Hz. XCC = 10% RC = RC / 10 = 180 Ω, CC = 1 / (2π f XCC) = 1 / (2π × 50 × 180) = 17.6 µF ≈ 22 µF. XCE = 10% RE = RE / 10 = 47 Ω, CE = 1 / (2π × 50 × 47) = 67 µF ≈ 100 µF.
