Promoting Authenticity in the CLIL Classroom

Promoting authenticity means that teachers must ensure that learning is as realistic and functional as possible. To be more specific, I want to introduce an activity: First, we hold an assembly with the pupils to set all the contents they are going to study. We also ask them what tools they need to work on these contents. Finally, if other schools are working on the same project, we can conduct video conferencing via the internet.

Key Strategies for Authentic Learning

  • Peer Tutoring: Letting students ask for the language help they need.
  • Role-Playing: Maximizing the accommodation of student interests.
  • Real-World Connections: Making a regular connection between learning and the students’ lives (e.g., preparing cooking recipes).
  • Inter-School Communication: Connecting with other speakers of the CLIL language (students can write letters once a month to students at different schools about their experience with CLIL methodology).
  • Media Integration: Using current materials from the media and other sources (e.g., creating a class blog where all students can participate).

Creating a Safe Classroom Environment

Safety consists of ensuring that children feel secure and comfortable in the classroom. To achieve this, we must implement the following:

Practical Methods for a Secure Learning Space

  • Routine Activities: Use discourse and routines, such as writing the day and weather on the blackboard or using a culture calendar to highlight important facts for each date.
  • Visual Scaffolding: Display language and content throughout the classroom by using pictures and posters on the walls, which should be interrelated with the context of the unit.
  • Building Confidence: Encourage students to experiment with language and content, such as organizing a market where they must buy and sell products while speaking English.
  • Classroom Learning Centers: Utilize different centers for Language, Math, Science, and Music. These centers should change throughout the course to adapt to the curriculum.
  • Authentic Environments: Guide access to authentic learning materials and environments by going outside to observe real-world applications of the lessons.
  • Language Awareness: Increase student language awareness by introducing the strategy of exolingual communication, which accounts for different levels of language proficiency between individuals.
