Historical Movements
The Enlightenment
Definition: An 18th-century intellectual movement that believed in reason, science, and knowledge, proposing a new, more liberal way of organizing society.
Politics: They supported the separation of powers (legislative, executive, and judicial). They defended popular sovereignty, the social contract, and the creation of parliaments to limit monarchical power.
Economy: They opposed mercantilism, which was based on the accumulation of precious metals as the main source of national wealth. They defended agriculture as the primary source of prosperity.
Society: They opposed a stratified society, arguing that no one should inherit prestige or privilege based on their ancestors. They defended social mobility, equality of origin, and personal merit.
Science and Art: The dominant art style was Neoclassicism.
Ancien Régime
Definition: The political and social system of the Kingdom of France from the late Middle Ages until 1792, when the hereditary monarchy and the feudal system of the French nobility were abolished by the French Revolution.
Politics: Absolute monarchy predominated. The King held absolute power: he issued laws, appointed judges and ministers, administered justice, and commanded the army. The king's power was theoretically limited by coronation oaths, but it was believed to come directly from God.
Economy: The main economic policies were mercantilism and manorialism. People practiced subsistence farming to survive. Agriculture was the predominant activity, and land was entailed, meaning it could not be bought or sold.
Society: It was divided into three estates: clergy, nobility, and ordinary people. This stratified society was characterized by civic inequality. The clergy and nobility did not pay taxes and held privileges over the peasants.
Science and Art: The dominant art style was Rococo.
