The Salem Witchcraft Crisis Begins
In the Puritan New England town of Salem, Massachusetts, a group of girls is caught dancing in the forest with a black slave named Tituba. Upon being discovered by the local minister, Reverend Parris, his daughter Betty falls into a coma-like state. As rumors of witchcraft spread, a crowd gathers at the Parris home. Parris summons Reverend Hale, an expert on the occult, and questions his niece and ward, Abigail Williams, about the forest events. Abigail insists that they were merely dancing.
The Secret Affair of John Proctor
While Parris attempts to manage the growing crowd, Abigail warns the other girls to remain silent. John Proctor, a local farmer, arrives and speaks with Abigail privately. It is revealed that Abigail previously worked in the Proctor home and engaged in an affair with John, leading to her dismissal by his wife, Elizabeth. Despite Abigail's lingering desire for him, Proctor rejects her advances and demands she end her foolish behavior.
Escalating Tensions and False Confessions
Betty suddenly wakes and begins screaming, drawing the crowd to her bedroom to debate whether she is bewitched. A heated dispute erupts between Proctor, Parris, Giles Corey, and Thomas Putnam regarding money and land deeds, highlighting the deep divisions within the Salem community. As the men argue, Reverend Hale examines Betty and grows suspicious of Abigail's behavior. He demands to speak with Tituba, who, under interrogation, confesses to communing with the devil and accuses various townsfolk of witchcraft. Caught in the hysteria, Abigail and Betty join her, naming others as witches and throwing the town into an uproar.
