Science: Definition and Role
Science is rational, systematic, accurate, and verifiable, therefore inherently fallible and subject to constant revision. It forms the foundation of scientific research. As an activity, science is integrated into social life when applied to improve the quality of life (e.g., in medicine, engineering, architecture), thus transforming into technology.
Technique vs. Technology
Understanding Technique
Technique refers to a procedure or a set of procedures aimed at obtaining a particular result.
Defining Technology
Technology is a comprehensive set of procedures or processes designed to achieve a determined result. It serves the needs of human groups, individuals, and society. While science seeks knowledge and technique focuses on the 'doing,' technology embodies the 'know-how.'
Classification of Technologies
Hard Technologies
Based on physical processes (e.g., electronic, electrical, mechanical systems) or chemical processes (e.g., food, pharmaceutical, and nuclear applications).
Soft Technologies
Based on intellectual processes (e.g., statistical analysis, accounting, organizational methods, administration).
Management: Principles and Purpose
What is Management?
Management is the action of applying existing resources to meet a plan. It involves making decisions, implementing them, and controlling outcomes. It is the application of knowledge, often acquired through soft technologies, to lead an organization effectively.
Origin of Management Technologies
Management technologies arise from fundamental human needs, such as bodily integrity (food, clothing, shelter, health, rest). Additionally, cultural needs stemming from social relations also play a role, including family, work, private property, and security.
Purpose of Management Technologies
The primary purposes of management technologies include:
- Rational use of various resources.
- Optimizing resource performance to obtain maximum quality products.
- Satisfying consumers by producing goods and services that meet needs.
- Improving quality of life and user satisfaction.
- Caring for the environment.
- Optimally covering basic and cultural needs.
Scope of Management Technologies
The scope of management technologies encompasses social and economic realities, considering constraints such as infrastructure, availability of resources (human, financial, inputs), and technological capabilities.
Understanding Systems
Definition of a System
A system is a set of objects, along with the relationships between these objects and their attributes, which are components or parts of the system. Essentially, a system is a collection of interrelated elements working towards a common end or aim.
Key Characteristics of Systems
A system typically satisfies three conditions:
- The behavior of each component affects the behavior of the entire system.
- The behavior of the elements and their effects are interdependent.
- No single element has an independent effect on the whole system; rather, it's the interaction that matters.
Each part of a system loses its essential properties if separated from the system. A system's efficient operation does not depend solely on how well each individual part performs, but rather on how all parts interact together.
The Systems Approach
The systems approach postulates that each part of a system is related to the others, such that a change in one part would cause a change in all of them and in the total system. This is because a system behaves as a complex, inseparable, and consistent whole.
Social Systems Components
Social systems consist of certain key components. From a systems approach, we observe three sets of variables:
